Diode or Nd:YAG? Choosing the right laser for your skin tone

Not all lasers suit all skin. Why Rewind uses two wavelengths, and how we choose between them.

Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin, the pigment in the hair. The light is absorbed by the hair, heats the follicle and reduces regrowth. The challenge is that skin contains melanin too, and the deeper your skin tone, the more it has.

Diode: the all-rounder

Diode lasers are the workhorse of modern hair removal. They're fast, effective and comfortable, especially with built-in cooling, and they suit fair to olive skin very well.

Nd:YAG: made for deeper skin tones

The Nd:YAG laser uses a longer wavelength that passes through surface pigment and reaches the follicle more safely. That makes it the preferred choice for brown and deep skin tones, where a shorter wavelength could be absorbed by the skin itself.

Why not IPL?

IPL (intense pulsed light) isn't a laser. It uses a broad spectrum of light rather than a single, targeted wavelength. It can work on some skin and hair types, but it's less precise. We'd rather match the wavelength to you.

What about light hair?

Because laser targets pigment, very light, red, grey or white hair usually doesn't respond well, whichever laser is used. If that's you, we'll say so at your consultation rather than sell you a course that won't work.
